An important component of the VIP team experience is peer evaluation. Students evaluate classmates with whom they work, with one evaluation at midterms and one at the end of each semester. Only instructors can view completed evaluations, and they use them in monitoring student progress. Students can only submit peer evaluations during active evaluation periods. Instructors can access evaluations at any time.

Please Note:

  • Peer-evaluations are REQUIRED for all students and are an important part of your overall grade.
  • Once peer-evaluations are closed, the VIP program cannot re-open them.
  • Complete peer evaluations as soon as possible so we have time to help you if you encounter issues.
  • Students can only access the peer evaluation portion of the system during active evaluation periods.
  • Users must be either connected to Eduroam or logged in via VPN (Virtual Private Network).
  • To report problems, send a screenshot and description of when the error occurs, along with your username, GTID, VIP team name, and section # to vip@gatech.edu.

VIP notebooks, whether electronic or hard-copy, allow students to track and document their efforts. In turn, VIP notebooks allow instructors to assess student contributions to the team. Notebooks are graded twice each semester and explicit feedback is given in categories including: completeness of meeting and design notes; maintenance and check-off of a to-do list; usability by future students who may need to understand why a particular design decision was made; etc.

Notebook Essentials:

  • Notebook Maintenance: Your notebook should not have removable pages and each page should be numbered, dated, and signed.
  • To -Do List Maintenance: Maintain check-boxes for items to be done that are then checked-off and dated when done.
  • Meeting Notes: Include detailed meeting notes with to do lists, as well as deadlines for your subteam and overall team.
  • Technical Notes: Include detailed design notes and decisions, diagrams, copies of code (or code locations), records of important websites, ideas, etc.

Workload

  • 1 credit: 3 hours outside of full team meeting
  • 2 credits: 7 hours outside of full team meeting
  • 3 credits: 11 hours outside of full team meeting (available in 3rd semester, see note*)

Scheduled Commitments

  • Weekly full team meeting (50-minutes)
  • Subteam meetings outside of class, scheduled with teammates and instructor after semester starts

* Undergraduates can only use the 3-credit option once. It is only available to students who meet 4 criteria: 1) are in their third or later semester with the same team, and 2) in their last semester with the team, and 3) the student was enrolled with the team immediately prior to the 3-credit semester (excluding summer), and 4) the student has instructor approval.

Klaus 1440, Van Leer 465, and Van Leer 483-B are available for VIP team and subteam meetings. The buttons below link to Google calendars where you can check their availability. Outside of regularly scheduled class times and events scheduled here, teams need to share the space and use general courtesy and common sense.

Why can’t I register?

While returning students do not need to “apply,” you still need to request a registration permit each semester. Permit requests for returning students can be found here.  This is the same form, but the system recognizes you as a returning student, and your request will routed/approved differently.

Where (or when) is my class?

For your specific VIP class days, times and locations, please refer to the Teams page.

Can I switch teams?

The VIP Program does not allow students to freely switch from team to team. As a disincentive, students are typically asked to take a one-semester break (summer does not count) between participation on one team and another. Students seeking exception to this rule should provide a detailed explanation in the comments section in the online application.

Is VIP hiring?

VIP routinely seeks out undergraduate student assistants to help with administrative and web form tasks. While we are not currently hiring, if you are interested, please contact vip@gatech.edu for more information.

I want to switch the number of credits I registered for. How do I do that?

Yes, please simply submit a new application with the desired number of credits.

Where can I find my CRN?

You should receive an email once VIP issues your permit.  Please double check your spam/junk mailbox.

Where is the submit button for peer evaluations?

If you can’t see the submit button, zoom out to 50%.  Once you have this expanded view, you should see the button appear.
