NeuroCScience Outreach

Goals

Connect neuroscience and CS in K12 classrooms with interactive demonstrations. The team will design and build demos, do demonstrations at schools and community-facing events, assess impact, and present/communicate findings with the possibility of publications.

Issues Involved or Addressed

K12 educators struggle to provide examples and projects for CS that pique student interest. Neuroscience is an interesting/exciting context, and while its inclusion in CS classrooms could motivate more students to go into both CS and neuroscience, most educators have little experience with  neuroscience. The NeuroCSience team will bridge this gap by designing, building, delivering, and assessing demonstrations for use in classrooms. The team will work with local schools, develop and build demonstrations aligned with the Georgia K12 curricula, assess the effects of demos on audience learning and presenters’ self-efficacy, and disseminate their work to teachers through an online library.
Students will explore current literature on the topic, pitch ideas, develop protocols for institutional review board (IRB) approval, build/deploy/assess demos, and contribute to blogs that track the team’s progress.
