Intelligent Digital Communications

Goals
To enhance spectrum utilization, enable improved use of smart devices (smartphones, tablets), and create intelligent mechanisms for debugging, monitoring, policing, and enhancing all types of wireless communications through the use of software defined radio techniques, machine learning, digital signal processing, and RF communication technologies.
Traditionally, wireless communications systems use dedicated hardware to implement the telecommunications coding, decoding, and signal analysis to create a useable data channel. As RF spectrum becomes increasingly scarce, and devices become more intelligent, using a software implementation and taking a cognitive systems approach to their design and operation will allow significantly increased flexibility in how spectrum is used and how smart devices interact.
Issues Involved or Addressed
Spectrum utilization and security in wireless channels, computation performance of software radios, identifying specific wireless devices in high density environments, multi-node software radio sensornets, distributed detection/estimation, reusability.
