Ground Breaking Infrastructure

Goals
Underground infrastructure is responsible for the foundations of bridges and buildings and the construction of utilities, pavements and road tunnels. In this team, we combine rapid prototyping, electronics, and computational algorithms to create ground breaking underground technologies to: i) Improve the way we burrow and excavate soils ii) Create new methods to measure the characteristics of soils iii) Propose new types of anchors and foundations to build structures in challenging environments, from the deep sea to mars.
Issues Involved or Addressed
Resilience of existing infrastructure to extreme events Energy transition (offshore wind and deep sea mining) Exploration and construction in challenging environments (underground, deep waters, extraterrestrial)
Methods and Technologies
- Electronics (micro-controllers sensing strain gauges)
- Data Analytics
- Rapid prototyping (3d printing laser-cutting water-jet CNC …)
- Optimization Algorithms
Majors Sought
Engineering: Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Machine Learning, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics
Preferred Interests and Preparation
Curiosity or expertise in prototyping and/or coding, interest in experimental testing and/or numerical modeling.
