Students as Partners in Education

Goals
Use action research to identify the support Georgia Tech students need to be successful in the classroom to support faculty professional development. The team will use social science methods to design, develop, conduct, and analyze an action research study on student experiences in the classroom; relate and connect student experiences in the classroom to best practices in teaching and learning; and design a student-led faculty panel on the needs of Georgia Tech undergraduate students.
Issues Involved or Addressed
One goal of a Center for Teaching and Learning is to provide faculty development. Often, student voices are missing from this work. With each new generation, students are finding more power in their voices and want agency in their learning and education. With the COVID-19, many issues students faced came to light in a more pronounced way and student well-being is now at the forefront of higher education. These factors contribute to the importance of a SaP program in which student voices are directly influencing faculty and educational development. In this VIP, we will work as a team to understand the support Georgia Tech students need to be successful in the classroom. To do this work, we will use action research, which aims “1) to improve practice and contribute to conceptual and practical knowledge by improving our understanding of a situation and its complexity; and (2) “¦ to suggest and make positive changes to the environment, context, and conditions in which that practice takes place, to achieve and sustain desirable improvement and effective development” (Zuber-Skerritt & Wood, 2019). The team will also have the opportunity to develop and facilitate student-led panels for faculty on their findings. Students will have an opportunity to submit proposals on their work to conferences within the fields of faculty and educational development and discipline-based education research and/or academic journals.
