Art & AI

Goals

This project merges visual culture, image-making, and AI by exploring how machine learning can enhance artistic creation. Led by an artist and AI researcher, the team analyzes and experiments with applying machine learning to generate creative images. Their collaborative work spans art, research, digital technology, and popular culture, aiming to produce a wide range of visual outputs. Initial experiments focus on 2D renderings, with plans to expand into 3D and animated creations. This initiative offers innovative insights into the intersection of technology and art, transforming approaches to image-making through artificial intelligence.

Issues Involved or Addressed

Our approaches will include exploration of supervised and unsupervised learning, knowledge-based reasoning and learning approaches (rule-based, case-based, decision-trees, probabilistic, causal and constraint-based reasoning) used to morph, merge, modify, edit selected images and image corpuses. We will apply rapid prototyping as an automated sketch technique. Image extraction and image understanding techniques may be applied as well.

Methods and Technologies

  • Contribute to a database of face parts derived from both handmade and photographic sources.
  • Design a range of lighting modeling and brushstroke renderings.
  • Elaborate on artistic photographic and cinematic conventions for lighting scenarios.
  • Convert centuries of visual techniques into a digital format.
