Goals
Some of the strengths of Media Arts are its interdisciplinary nature and innovative use of technology and artistic practices. These strengths create problems in publishing academic or creative media-arts projects in traditional books and journals. Our goals are: 1) Research how and why non-traditional journals operate (funding, print & web-based strategies, peer-review vs peer-supported, and open access) 2) Develop a style & practice to publish media arts projects & research that require more than text and images to communicate 3) Launch a journal in that style & practice
Issues Involved or Addressed
Scholarly publishing is an essential part of the academic project. The academy’s reliance on traditional modes of publishing, which includes print materials’ inability to fully render digital, multi-, and mixed media projects, can make publishing a complicated and unrewarding venture for a researcher or artist. This will limit experimentation and creativity in Media Arts, reduce a scholar’s pool of collaborators, and make media arts a less desirable field to research.
